2003 NBS Truckload Carcass Contest Results

Truckload Carcass winners named at 2003 National Barrow Show® A group of Hampshire hogs entered by Steve Earnhardt and Family of Albion, Ind., captured the Dr. Lauren Christian Award of Excellence in the carcass competition at the 2003 National Barrow Show® truckload competition. The award is presented annually to the National Barrow Show® grand champion truckload carcass winner. These six hogs had previously been named Reserve Champion Purebred Truckload in the live competition. The winner in the carcass division is selected according to an index that includes percent lean and muscle-quality traits. Average results of the winning truckload were 31.8 inch carcass length, 0.34 inch fat at the tenth rib, 8.18 inch average loin eye, and 64.55 percent lean. David Martin of Marion, Iowa, claimed the Reserve Champion Truckload Carcass honors with his truckload of Yorkshire-sired crossbred hogs that were named Grand Champion Truckload in the live competition. Average measurements of his truckload were 31.5 inch carcass length, 0.35 inch fat at the tenth rib, 7.44 inch loin eye, and 64.28 percent lean. The remaining top 10 are as follows: 3 – Center Prairie Genetics, Princeton, Ill. – purebred Yorkshire load Established in 1999, the Dr. Lauren Christian Award of Excellence recognizes Christian’s dedication to the improvement of truckload carcass evaluation procedures used at the show and throughout the industry. The 57th National Barrow Show®, held Sept. 8-10 at the Mower County Fairgrounds in Austin, Minn., was sponsored by the National Association of Swine Records.
